Jung’s Redbook: Profound encounters with the Self

A 4-week teleconference led by Michael Conforti

The Redbook has created a renewed passion for Jungian thought, bringing together artists, scientists, analysts and laypersons from around the world, who appreciate the beauty and profundity of Jung’s paintings, writings and respect for the unconscious. It was his inner need to represent and bring to consciousness, those autonomous entities within the creative unconscious that led him to paint, and create a relationship to the Self, which has drawn us to this work, and to the realm of the transcendent.

In this series Dr. Conforti will discuss the archetypal underpinnings of the images and ideas in The Redbook, and discuss their relevance for our own personal journey.

Dates for the Seminars;

Wednesdays, June 16,23,30, and July 7, 2010

Time: 8:00 – 9:30 p.m.

Fee: $30/seminar, $100, for the entire series

* As the readings will be sent out prior to each meeting, it is not necessary that participants own a copy of the Redbook. However, copies of the Redbook can be purchased at a discount through the Assisi Office.

News From...The Jungian Center

The Jungian Center

55 Clover Lane, Waterbury, VT

Announces

Two Presentations by Erica Lorentz, Jungian Analyst

1. A Friday evening lecture on June 4: Jung, Spirituality and the Body

2. A Weekend Workshop on June 5th & 6th: Listening to Our Inner Stories: Active Imagination

For more information and to register, call Sue (802) 244-7909.

JUNG, SPIRITUALITY AND THE BODY

Friday, June 4th, 7-9PM; $20

This Friday evening lecture discusses the importance of witnessing and containing archetypal energies when they become embodied and emerge in our lives. Led by Erica Lorentz, Jungian analyst and teacher. The individuation process asks us to return to our personal unconscious and our archetypal roots. While we might be familiar with personal unconscious work, Jung pushes deeper and invites us to honor and understand archetypal forces the emerge into the body and consciousness. Archetypal experiences are often pathologized, though they have been experienced, observed and discussed since the beginning of human history. How can we have a creative relationship with them? Film clips and case material will illustrate Jung's concepts.

LISTENING TO OUR INNER STORIES: ACTIVE IMAGINATION

Saturday June 5th, 9 AM-5 PM

&

Sunday, June 6th, 9AM-3PM

Workshop Fee: $100

In this introduction to Jung's method of active imagination, we gently invite a dialog between our conscious aware self and some part of our unconscious psyche, using a non-structured, meditative exploration with drawing, writing and movement. Led by Erica Lorentz, Jungian analyst and teacher.
Experience active imagination, Jung's method of attending to the unconscious (as recorded in the Red Book). In active imagination, our conscious aware self invites a meaningful dialog with some part of our unconscious psyche. This dialog can take place through any expressive medium. In this workshop we will gently invite this dialog using a non-structured, meditative exploration with drawing, writing and movement. No experience is necessary: curiosity and a desire to attune to one's inner world is all that is important. When we allow the unconscious to speak in this manner, our soul story can begin to be heard. Insight into our psychology and spiritual path naturally emerges without interpretation. When we share together, each participant's experience will be treated with respect and not interpreted. Thus together we learn to honor our own and other's unique personal and spiritual paths.

Erica Lorentz, Med, LPC, Jungian analyst has 30 years of clinical experience and is a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. In the 1980’s she was an adjunct faculty member at Antioch New England. She has lectured and taught workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Workshop Description:

The gold in Jung's theory lies within the dynamic relationship, present in each of us, of the mental functions, S-N-T-F. Cutting through the complexity of this model, and turning it into a tool that is both understandable and applicable, can be difficult.

Using an interactive process, this session demystifies type dynamics. What does it mean to have introverted iNtuition as a dominant function? What does auxiliary extraverted Thinking look and sound like? In what ways does introverted Sensing as a dominant differ from introverted Sensing as an inferior function?

This full-day session is perfect for both those new to personality type theory and those more experienced with the model and tool. Participants must know their own preferences, but no other knowledge or experience is required. The workshop will introduce and cover all the information needed to explore these issues and others to make type dynamics easy to understand, explain and apply in self-awareness, consulting, coaching and training.

Workshop objectives:

Experience the function/attitudes in a model that makes type dynamics accessible and applicable

Understand your own type dynamics, and share if you care to

Learn about typological balance and how to achieve it

Plan ways to integrate type dynamics into your work as a trainer, consultant, coach or type user

About Our Presenter:

CEO and Owner of OKA, Hile Rutledge is co-developer of the Portraits of Jung Type Behavior, the author of the MBTI Introduction and Four Temperaments Workbooks and co-author of the revised Type Talk At Work. Hile is an experienced organization development consultant, trainer and public speaker with a background in management, sales, adult education and leadership development. Hile's primary area of expertise is in the use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment as a self-management, leadership and communication tool. ASSISI INSTITUTE Summer Conference

Self in Exile - Psyche, Healing and Sense of Place
July 20 -27, 2010

On the Island of Procida, Italy in the Bay of Naples

There is something profound about finding one's special place. We become transfixed by its power, charm and magic. The beautiful island of Procida is just such a site, and home to our 2010 Summer Conference. The oldest island in the Bay of Naples, Procida maintains its charm as an Italian fishing village, and with its scenic panoramas and unique Mediterranean architecture, the island has served as the setting for several films, including Il Postino, a story of the exiled poet, Pablo Neruda.

Throughout history, humanity has recognized the power of place, and has designated certain locations throughout the world as sacred sites. While we have always known the transformative power of place, contemporary researchers are discovering a physiological relationship between place, well-being, and healing. So too, we find that while connection to a place can be transformative, exile and estrangement create a loss of Self, a sense of rootlessness in the psyche, and a longing for one's place - in both the inner and outer world.

Our faculty for this program, all leading thinkers and artists, will explore this theme from a truly trans-disciplinary perspective. We hope you can join us on the island of Procida for this special event.

News From The Jung Book Group

The Jung Book Group has been meeting for almost fifteen years. It is a gathering of those who are interested in Jungian psychology and related topics. In addition to books by Jung, we have read the works of various renowned Jungians including Marie Louise von Franz, Sylvia Brunton Perrera, Edward Whitmont, Edward Edinger and Barbara Hannah. The topics we have covered are wide ranging. Some examples are the structure of the psyche, dreams, fairy tales, tarot, Gnosticism, and Jung’s life and work.

More recently the group members interests have turned to topics related to Jungian psychotherapy. We are about to finish discussion of David Sedgwick’s The Wounded Healer, Countertransference from a Jungian Perspective. This intriguing book by an American Jungian is valuable reading for anyone engaged in the practice of psychotherapy. It is divided into three sections: Jungian Approaches to Countertransference, Case Illustrations and Conclusions.

In the first section, Sedgwick presents Jung’s and what might be called post-Jungian theories and practices regarding countertransference. He also introduces the concept of the Wounded Healer as a guiding myth for the practice of psychotherapy. In the case illustrations, he courageously discloses his own thoughts and feelings (countertransferences) to two different clients beginning with his initial contact with them and throughout their analysis. He relates these reactions to his own inner wounded healer and the healing process that occurs in the analyst as well as the client. The last section of the book conveys his own synthesis of theoretical, clinical and personal experience into a Countertransference Model. Sedgwick delineates phases of the countertransference work, and addresses additional aspects of it such as typology, the shadow, boundaries and self-disclosure by the analyst/therapist.

The Book Group members found The Wounded Healer to be a good read, and as all current members are psychotherapists (though this is not a membership requirement) discussion often turned to applying the material to our work.

In February, we will begin reading The Inner World of Trauma, Archetypal Defenses of the Personal Spirit by Donald Kalsched, a psychoanalyst and instructor at the C.G. Jung Institute in New York. In this volume, the author discusses the work of the inner self to heal the personal spirit. He interweaves classical Jungian and contemporary psychological theories and shows how myth and archetypal imagery can aid in the healing process.

Anyone interested in joining the Book Group is welcome to contact Luanne Sberna at 802-863-9775, ext. 2. We are currently meeting every third week on Friday afternoons, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the Burlington area.
