PSYCHE & SOMA: HEALING THE MIND-BODY SPLIT
Luanne Sberna, M.A., Presenter

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2009
5:30-7:30 PM
Fletcher Free Library Community Room
College Street, Burlington

This presentation explores the re-uniting of mind and body on the path to Individuation, “the slow unfolding of a wholeness already there,” particularly through adaptations of C.G. Jung’s Active Imagination technique.

Our bodies contain the roots of collective and personal myths. They are the conduits through which all experience is psychologized. We will consider this interplay of the personal and archetypal, the physical and the psychological in the healing process by drawing on the work of pioneering Dance-Movement Therapists and other practitioners of somatic therapies who have been influenced by Jung’s work.

Join us as we explore this topic through discussion, video presentation and brief experiential activities.

And if the body does not do fully as much as the soul? And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul? –Walt Whitman

Movement is the medium in which we live our lives. - Marian Chace

The human imagination is grounded in the energies of the body. And the organs of the body are the determinants of these energies and the conflicts between the impulse systems of the organs and the harmonization of them. These are the matters of myth. - Joseph Campbell

The moment when “I am moved” happens is astonishing both to dancers and to people who have no intention of becoming dancers. It is a moment when the ego gives up control, stops choosing, stops exerting demands, allowing the Self to take over moving the physical body as it will. This is a moment of unpremeditated surrender that cannot be explained, repeated exactly...This is humbling and freeing for the personality that demands perfection, control, conformity–all the ills of our social training. –Mary Whitehouse
