PSYCHOLOGICAL TYPE AND ARCHETYPE

Presenter: Luanne Sberna

March 28th 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Fletcher Free Library (Community Room)

Burlington, VT

Description: Many people today are familiar with Psychological Type due to the popularity of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. This presentation returns to its roots as one of Jung’s principal theoretical concepts. We will explore the interface of personal, cultural and archetypal aspects of Psychological Type.

“These archetypes, whose innermost nature is inaccessible to experience, are the precipitate of the psychic functioning of the whole ancestral line; the accumulated experiences of organic life in general, a million times repeated and condensed into types.”

-C.G. Jung, Psychological Types

“If the archetypes are also described as “a priori determinants” in the unconscious, then the types fit this description. They are “inborn forms” of the consistent traits, images and behaviors found in persons throughout the world.”

- John Giannini, Compass of the Soul: Archetypal Guids to a Fuller Life

“...everywhere in myth and symbolism there appears the model of the fourfold structure of the psyche...the archetypal constellation would be at the base of the psyche; this is the structural tendency to develop four functions...”

-Marie-Louise von Franz, Lectures on Jung’s Typology

The presenter, Luanne Sberna, has studied Psychological Type and applied it to her work as a psychotherapist and educator for over 20 years. She is a Myers Briggs Type Indicator Master Practitioner and also specializes in Dance-Movement Therapy.
